Description
Welcome to UK Space Command’s Defence Space Conference 2024
“Assured access to space underpins the UK’s economy, prosperity, security, and defence. However, as our dependence deepens, threats are increasing and diversifying. The Defence Space Conference will provide a forum to explore what must be done to secure our national interests in space.”
Major General Paul Tedman
Commander, UK Space Command
UK Space Command’s Defence Space Conference is the leading platform for all those who seek to influence and play a role in the development and operation of the UK’s military space capabilities.
Defence Space Conference brings together senior UK military and government officials, space commanders from international space partners and allies and leaders in disruptive technologies, including the space SME and technology start-up communities. Defence Space coheres military space strategy and operations with space technology and innovation.
The conference programme is led by UK Space Command, the Ministry of Defence’s lead for space operations, space workforce and space capability. Our key conference partner is Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) and other participants include the Ministry of Defence, Strategic Command, the UK Space Agency and DSTL.
The two-day conference is the UK’s primary event for sharing strategic plans, operational capability targets, and programme delivery milestones for the Space Domain while also facilitating dialogue and deepening UK Space Command’s and UK Defence’s relationships with partners across government, the space industrial sector, international partners and academia. Outputs from the conference are intended to help steer discussions and guide strategies for new technologies and capabilities to enhance Space support to operations, develop the UK’s space workforce, and bolster UK Defence capability.
UK SPACE COMMAND NEXT STEPS: INDUSTRY FORUM
We are delighted to announce that Major General Tedman, Commander UK Space Command will be closing the final day of Defence Space Conference 2024 with a Space Command Industry Forum.
This will be an opportunity for Major General Tedman to share his thoughts and vision with industry on ‘UK Space Command’s Next Steps’ with the focus on the following themes:
– Space Control
– Global Sense
– Decision Advantage
– Mission Network
This pitch to industry will be held alongside the Defence Space Conference 2024 at IET from 1600 – 1700 on 25th September. There will be an opportunity for a Q&A session afterwards. There will be 450 places available for the Industry Pitch; we do not expect demand for the event to exceed this, but if interest exceeds availability we will offer places on a first come, first serve basis.
This forum will also be livestreamed through the Conference website.
PLEASE NOTE, Registration for this event has now closed.
Themes for this year’s Defence Space Conference
- The Joint Space
How will the UK tackle the threats in the Space Domain? These threats threaten not only our national security, but our military operations. Multi Domain Operations are becoming increasingly important; how will Space integrate with the Land, Sea, Air and Cyber Domains to tackle these threats?
The Space Workforce is also cross-domain both in terms of military expertise but also space expertise must be integrated across other parts of the defence industry. How are we going to develop a dynamic and talented space workforce for the military and Defence Space Sector for the future? How will we attract the next generation into the Space sector and what are the tools we need to develop our future space workforce?
- The Combined Force
What are the threats we face and how do they relate to Space? How can international collaboration tackle these? International collaboration is a key focus area for growth in the UK space sector. The war in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East has reinforced the need for securing information advantage and enhancing military space capability. Senior space practitioners and policymakers will explore ways to deepen the UK’s policy, operations, and capability-focussed activities with international partners. Speakers will highlight the latest initiatives to bolster the UK’s existing and future relationships.
- Integrated Partners
Integration with partners in the Space domain is uniquely crucial, compared to the rest of Defence. Integration across government departments, not just Defence, is critical as the Space Domain relies on dual-use technologies and capabilities. Integration is also vital between industry and Defence to foster an innovative space sector and ensure agile procurement of space capabilities to serve the warfighter.
- Space Futures
Space is one of the fastest moving domains. Physical space capability developments are moving as rapidly as software developments with capabilities developed three years ago now potentially already outdated. What are the latest game-changing technologies in the space sector? Developments such as Dynamic Space Operations and new propulsion methods, for example, are changing the way we conduct space operations.
Defence Space Conference draws over 450 delegates from across the space domain including military and government organisations, international space partners, the space science and technology and academic community and space industry including regional SMEs.
Keynote speakers include:
- Luke Pollard MP Minister for the Armed Forces (Video Address)
- Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton Chief of the Air Staff, Royal Air Force
- General Stephen N. Whiting Commander, United States Space Command
- Lieutenant General Sir Charlie Stickland Chief of Joint Operations Permanent Joint Headquarters
- Brigadier General John L. Dawber Deputy Commanding General for Operations, U.S. Army Space & Missile Defense Command
- Major General Paul Tedman Commander, UK Space Command
- Avril Jolliffe Director General Industry, Trade and Economic Security, MOD
- Dr Paul Bate Chief Executive Officer, UK Space Agency
- Air Marshal (Ret’d) Sir Stuart Atha Former Deputy Commander Operations, Royal Air Force
